AFP, ZURICHIncreasing the World Cup from 32 teams to 48, as proposed by FIFA president Gianni Infantino, would generate an additional US$640 million, according to a confidential FIFA report seen by Agence France-Presse on Friday. An expanded tournament with 48 countries, featuring 16 groups of three teams, starting with the 2026 edition, would see revenues swell to US$4.18 billion compared with the US$3.54 billion predicted for next year’s World Cup in Russia.Meanwhile, costs associated with enlarging the number of participating teams and an increase in matches (80 rather than 64 for a 32-team format) would climb by US$325 million.

Their promise of extra funding from Zurich could also be secured by FIFA’s forecast 20 percent rise in rights fees paid by broadcasters and sponsors.”Financially, the 48-team format is the most appealing or successful simply because the sporting element is prevailing and every match is important,” Infantino said two weeks ago.”The decision should not be financially driven, neither in terms of revenue or costs … but the driver should really be the development of football and boosting football all over the world.”
