WASHINGTON — NL Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer revealed Monday that he pitched at the end of last season with an injured finger on his throwing hand and now will skip the World Baseball Classic.The Washington Nationals initially announced Monday on Twitter that their star right-hander has a stress fracture in the knuckle of his right ring finger, without offering any details of the problem.The team said the ongoing rehabilitation will keep Scherzer off the U.S. team at the WBC, which is in March, but he is still “expected to be a full participant” at spring training, which starts next month.

Nationals righty Max Scherzer has been diagnosed with what the club is calling a “stress fracture in the knuckle of his right ring finger.” Per the organization’s announcement, Scherzer will not participate as planned in the upcoming World Baseball Classic.Though the injury will knock Scherzer out of the international tournament, he is expected “to be a full participant” in spring camp.That’s certainly a promising element to the injury, which otherwise represents a somewhat concerning development for the 32-year-old workhorse.

Scherzer sent out a statement on his Twitter account Monday night, revealing that he discomfort in his finger began in late August.It was diagnosed then as a finger sprain, but he continued to pitch through it because he was pain-free during his starts and his performance was unaffected.He went 5-0 with a 3.29 ERA and 10.8 strikeouts per nine innings in his six starts during the final month of the season.
