The Chicago Park District is a step closer to transforming two publicly owned golf courses on the South Side into a one championship course after approving a feasibility study for the $30 million project.Less than a month after details of the proposal surfaced, park district board members yesterday approved a two-year, $1.1 million contract with SmithGroupJJR for a design and engineering study on the Jackson Park and South Shore golf courses.It’s the first major financial step toward transforming the historic lakefront links into a Tiger Woods-designed 18-hole course worthy of hosting PGA events.

Two days after assuring South Side residents that a Tiger Woods-designed golf course in Jackson Park was not yet a sure thing, Chicago park officials Wednesday awarded a $1.1 million contract to begin site planning and engineering work.The pact with SmithGroup JJR — the park board’s first public action on a project that has been shaping up privately for months — comes as park neighbors and activists are pushing to have a voice on the project, which is queued up for groundbreaking this spring.”I’m excited about the development; however, my concern is that the community (be) involved in the process and that our community remains a community that will prosper for all,” Natasha Dunn, a South Shore resident and parks advocate, said Monday at the first community meeting on the proposal.
