as mentioned in (Orlin Wagner/Associated Press)PHOENIX — Major League Baseball Players Association chief Tony Clark labeled as “unprecedented” and “unprofessional” the recent remarks of New York Yankees President Randy Levine regarding the salary arbitration case of Yankees reliever Dellin Betances.
“It’s like me saying, ‘I’m not the president of the Yankees.
“No, no, no,” Clark said when asked whether the players would support the extra-innings rule change in the majors.
On Saturday, Levine invited Yankees reporters on a conference call, in which he ripped Betances for “over-the-top demands” that amounted to his asking to be paid like a closer instead of a set-up man.
“I’m not an astronaut, and Dellin Betances is not a closer.”[Yankees president Randy Levine beats Dellin Betances in arbitration, then rips him]Levine was sharply criticized for the comments by Betances’s agent and others in the industry, and on Sunday, Clark added his voice.
as mentioned in The New York Yankees won their arbitration case over reliever Dellin Betances on Saturday and then team president Randy Levine criticized Betances and his agent for requesting $5 million.
“I’m not an astronaut, and Dellin Betances is not a closer, at least based on statistics, not whether he could be or couldn’t.”
He cited that Betances’ agent, Jim Murray, spent a large portion of Friday’s 90-minute hearing saying that the three-time All-Star setup man was as valuable as a closer.
“It is like me saying, ‘I’m not the president of the Yankees, I’m an astronaut,'” Levine said.
“However, we are not going to be bullied by the Yankees’ team president.
as mentioned in The Yankees won the trial on Saturday, and that’s the end of things, right?
This year, the Yankees and Dellin Betances were separated by $2 million when they exchanged salary figures, so they went to a trial.
Betances is under team control with the Yankees through 2020, so they do have some time to repair this relationship.
With that being said, Levine at the very least cost the Yankees a lot more in the long run if/when they decide to re-sign Betances.
Levine had some choice words for his star reliever, including insulting him for having the gall to ask for $5 million.
