After Wednesday the airport is going to use the commercial name Cristiano Ronaldo, but the official designation will only be confirmed when the bureaucratic process is finished.
The airport manager said that the ceremony is going to include the presence of the football player who is on the island with the national squad for a friendly game against Sweden, with the presence of President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and the prime minister, António Costa, dos members of the regional government, the player’s family and about 250 guests.

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo says he aims to live up to the honour and responsibility of having the airport on his home island of Madeira renamed after him.
“Thank you for being here in my honour,” Ronaldo is quoted by O Jogo as saying at the event.
Cristiano Ronaldo has been honoured after leading Portugal to Euro 2016 glory last summer.
