Why not limit Neil Gorsuch — and all Supreme Court justices — to 18-year terms? stat : The Washington Post

according to (Melina Mara/The Washington Post)This week, Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch took the hot seat and began testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Staff gathers and the media sets up before the Senate Judiciary Committee begins a confirmation hearing for U.S. Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch on Monday.
Having elected officials select Supreme Court justices ensures that, over time, the Supreme Court’s decisions do not get too far out of step with U.S. public opinion.
This perception of independence may be important to what scholars call the Supreme Court’s “diffuse support” — the perception that people support the Supreme Court regardless of disagreement with particular decisions because they believe the Supreme Court overall is engaged in something other than ordinary politics.
Creating legally enforceable Supreme Court term limits would almost certainly require amending the Constitution.

as mentioned in Sen. Susan Collins said Tuesday that she will support Judge Neil Gorsuch for a seat on the U.S. Supreme Court and called on her fellow senators not to stage a filibuster in an attempt to derail his nomination.
But a group of 49 Maine lawyers wrote King and Collins over the weekend, urging them to support Gorsuch.
MAINE ORGANIZATIONS OPPOSEDBefore Collins announced her decision, a coalition of Maine organizations called on both Maine senators to reject Gorsuch.
Collins cited Gorsuch’s academic and legal credentials in saying that she will back President Trump’s pick to fill the vacant seat on the court.
Collins, who met with Gorsuch in February, said she is convinced that the federal appeals court judge will follow the law, rather than his personal views, in deciding cases before the court.

as mentioned in Republicans uniformly portrayed Gorsuch as a genial, principled judge whose qualifications make him eminently suitable for the nation’s highest court.

Gorsuch could be on the bench by the time the justices meet for a round of arguments in mid-April.
But I just don’t think that’s what a life in the law is about,” Gorsuch said.
