Newton played the final three games of the 2016 season even though Carolina’s playoff hopes were essentially over because of its 5-8 record.
Dr. Pat Connor performed the surgery on the Panthers quarterback’s throwing shoulder at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
The 6-foot-5, 251-pound Phillips played in 16 games for the two teams last season and caught 10 passes, including one touchdown.
The Panthers hoped that rest during the off-season would allow the shoulder to heal naturally, but when it didn’t respond as expected Newton decided to have surgery .

Vermillion previously laid out the detailed plan for Newton’s rehab.
The seventh-year quarterback is projected to return to action for training camp.

Per the website, Vermillion “previously laid out (a) detailed (rehab) plan” for Newton, who is expected to return to the field in time for training camp.
